Would these two pieces of furniture overwhelm eachother on the same wall?

I’m re-designing my room, and I want it to have a very modern/contemporary feel to it. I was thinking of putting this shelf (http://www.velocityartanddesign.com/bookworm-bookshelf-pr-25325.html) in the medium size on my white wall, with this sofa (http://www.velocityartanddesign.com/nelson-marshmallow-sofa-c-377-p-1-pr-21248.html) underneath it. There will also be a mural on the wall perpendicular to it. I can use the colors white, black, and red. would the shelf and the sofa overwhelm the room, and if not, which color should they be? (walls are white, carpet is white)

It seems everywhere I go everything is so old and country looking, but I don’t necessarily want really clean IKEA furniture either. I am looking something more contemporary, you know, urban-style furniture.
Anyone have any suggestions???
I need to furnish an apartment (I already have a bedroom set and sofa set… didn’t get those here in NC). So, I’m looking for wall art, a quality dining table, rugs, console table, a couple of bookcases, a tv stand, a coffee table…

Hello, last week I was surfing the net and came across a unique furniture accessory I would like to purchase, however cannot locate the website which sold them. I will try to describe it to the best of my ability. Picture a sofa with a medium/large arm rests. Now picture a sort of durable placemat that can be draped over one of the arm rests and is sturdy enough to hold a glass/drink. This is the purpose of this item. To look contemporary/modern and also be functional. It was dark gray durable plastic or metal and is no larger than a normal placemat for your dining room table. But this can be rolled as it drapes over the arm rest. Thank you for any help!

I need advice for wall and window treatment color?

I have a tan sofa and burgundy red chair. I have an area rug (room size) in a somewhat traditional pattern of burgundy red, tan, gold and some Turquoise blues. My woods are dark mahogany. My walls are currently a light beige with milk chocolate trim, and the doors are dark chocolate brown. my current window treatments are roman shades in a paisley that is shades of tan, brown, reds, and blues (I made them). I am thinking of a light turquoise blue for the walls and a darker turquoise for drapes over the roman shades. Room is small. I am trying to go from a slightly traditional look to a somewhat contemporary look. Any suggestions, or critiques?

How do I coordinate rugs in a living/dining room space?

I have a living/dining room combo, and don’t know how to tie the two spaces together when it comes to rugs. I have an ivory flokati rug in my living space with a gray sofa. My walls are painted a very pale gray, and I used my dining wall as an accent and painted it teal. I have shades of teal accessories with pops of red throughout. I would really like a rug under my dining room table, but I don’t know what to choose. I would like something subtle and contemporary. Any suggestions?

Help! I have black couches and don't know how to decorate my living room w/them!!!?

We are moving into our new home which has tan colored tile and tan walls. We just got these new modern black leather couches. I like earthy colors, browns, blues, greens etc. I don’t want to do a black and white theme as thats not homey to me. I do like contemporary and modern though. I don’t want to get glass tables, they look to office like or bachlorpadish to me. Im starting ground up on putting my living room together as all we’ve gotten so far is the couches and our new tv. I think I would like to either use a light wood or cuppachino colored wood in it, but don’t know which. I’ve looked all over online and can’t find inspiration on how to decorate! Just to point out, I am going to be buying tables, tv stand, rugs pillows, accent pieces the whole deal. So where I am at now is trying to figure out what to get. I understand pillows are wonderful to tie in everything, but Im no way near the point of just buying a few pillows to tie it all in!

Suggestions and any pictures for a coffee table for my great room?

My great room is opened up to the kitchen. I have a black leather sectional sofa with a black/grayish rug in the room. TV is black, DVD storage shelf is black. I need to get a coffee table for this room. I don’t want black that would be too much. My style is modern contemporary with lots of colors for knick knacks and pictures.
Suggestions with any links for pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I live in a small apartment, and saw this at IKEA the other day, and thought this would give my living room a nice contemporary flare (and also solve a ton of my storage problems). Thing is, I can’t decide what color to get.
My sofa set is black leather, and my dinette set is cherry wood and glass. The rest of my apartment has white walls, and caramel carpet. What color do you think will work well with my home? I was thinking lighter because my other furniture is on the darker side. What do you think?
